If you're looking for a beginning-of-the-year read aloud that naturally opens the door to talking about friendship, kindness, and welcoming others, Bear's New Friend by Karma Wilson is one of my favorite go-tos.
The story follows Bear and his forest friends as they welcome a shy new animal into their group. It's gentle, it's sweet, and it gives K-2 students a real, relatable example of what it looks and feels like to make someone feel included. That makes it perfect for those first few weeks of school when your classroom community is still forming.
Why This Book Works So Well for SEL
Kids don't just need to be told to be kind — they need to see it modeled, then get the chance to practice putting it into words. Bear's New Friend does exactly that. After reading, students can talk through questions like:
How do you think the new friend felt at first?
What did Bear do to make them feel welcome?
How would you welcome a new friend?
That last question is where the real magic happens — and it's the centerpiece of the writing page in this resource.
What's Included
I built a full SEL and ELA companion for this book so you don't have to prep a thing:
A guided writing page — "How would you welcome a new friend?" with a drawing box and differentiated writing lines
SEL discussion questions tied directly to the story
A simple, no-mess craft to reinforce the theme
Print-and-go format — perfect for a read aloud lesson, morning meeting, or even sub plans
It's designed for K-2, so the writing supports scale depending on where your students are.
