We’ve all been there: you’ve reached the end of Level 2 Unit 1, and it’s time to see if those blends, digraphs, and closed syllables have truly stuck. You need a way to review that doesn't feel like "just another test."
If you’re looking for a high-engagement, low-prep way to reinforce Fundations-aligned phonics sounds and Trick Words, you are in the right place!
Why This Scoot Activity Works
This isn't just a generic phonics game. I designed this Level 2 Unit 1 Scoot specifically to align with the scope and sequence your students are already following. My students were itching to get off the carpet after phonics time. I needed something for fun Fridays to get them up and moving, so I created this supplemental activity.
Phonics Sound Mastery
Each card targets the specific sounds introduced in Unit 1. This includes beginning and ending blends (like bl- and -ip, as seen in the ship and blocks cards!). It’s a fantastic way to reinforce what they’ve learned.
Trick Word Integration
I’ve woven in those tricky "non-phonetic" words that students need to recognize by sight. This gives them extra exposure in a low-stakes environment. They won’t even realize they’re learning!
Active Learning
Students "scoot" from desk to desk, acting as Phonics Detectives to solve each word puzzle. It’s the perfect way to burn off energy while staying on task. You can also make it part of your centers as a review activity and turn them into task cards.

The Importance of Engaging Activities
Engaging activities are crucial for young learners. They help solidify concepts while keeping students excited about learning. When kids are active participants, they retain information better. This Scoot activity is designed to do just that!
Tips for Implementation
Set Clear Instructions: Before starting, explain the rules clearly. Make sure students know what to do at each station.
Use Visual Aids: Incorporate visuals to help students understand the tasks. This can be especially helpful for visual learners.
Encourage Teamwork: Allow students to work in pairs or small groups. This fosters collaboration and makes learning more enjoyable.
Provide Feedback: As students work through the activity, offer positive reinforcement. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small!
Conclusion
Incorporating fun, interactive activities like the Level 2 Unit 1 Scoot can transform your phonics lessons. Not only do they reinforce essential skills, but they also create a lively classroom atmosphere. So, why not give it a try? Your students will thank you for it!
Remember, learning should be fun! Let’s make every moment count!
